Neurochem identifies a series of compounds for the potential treatment of epilepsy.
Results presented at Sixth Eilat Conference on New Anti-Epileptic Drugs.

Neurochem Inc. (TSX : NRM) in collaboration with one of the Company's Principal Investigators Dr. Donald F. Weaver from Queen's University (Kingston, Canada), presented preclinical studies showing promising dual anti-convulsant and anti-epileptogenic activity profiles for a series of compounds under development for the potential prevention and treatment of seizures and convulsions associated with Epilepsy as well as preventing the development of Epilepsy following head trauma or acute brain injury. The poster presentation was made at the Sixth Eilat Conference on Neuro Anti-Epileptic Drugs held from April 7 - 11, 2002, in Sicily, Italy.

"We are enthusiastic about the progress of our innovative program," said Dr. Louis R. Lamontagne, President and CEO of Neurochem. "Because of their anti-epileptogenic activity, these compounds are being defined as a new class of drug candidates, and are now being assessed for their toxicology profile as part of pre-clinical development."

The Company is focusing on the development of dual-action compounds to treat epilepsy. In vivo evaluation has identified lead drug candidates that cross the blood brain barrier and act as both anti-epileptogenics - to prevent the genesis and the progression of the disease while inhibiting the development of abnormal electrical activity in the brain after head trauma or acute brain injury, as well as anti-ictogenics - to prevent seizures and convulsions resulting from the epileptogenesis process. The compounds were shown active in multiple models of ictogenesis as well as in different models of epileptogenesis, including the Kindling model and the "Spontaneous Recurrent Seizure" (SRS) model.

About Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurring seizures involving a loss of normal movement, disrupted consciousness and convulsions. It is a devastating condition, which is complicated by the multiplicity of its causal factors. Globally, Epilepsy affects approximately 2 million Americans, and each year an average of 14,000 people are newly diagnosed with the disorder. Neurochem has identified a large unmet clinical need for new therapeutic options for Epilepsy that offer both a cure for the disease and relief of the symptoms.

About Neurochem

Neurochem is an industry leader in the development of therapeutic drugs and diagnostic tools for central nervous system and amyloid-related diseases associated with aging. The Company has built a strong product pipeline by developing a novel, proprietary series of compounds that inhibit the formation, deposition and toxic effects of amyloid fibrils within the body. Neurochem's therapeutic programs target Alzheimer's Disease, Hemorrhagic Stroke (due to Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy), Secondary Amyloidosis, Diabetes Type II and Epilepsy. Neurochem is using a multi-pronged approach towards the development of pharmaceuticals for Alzheimer's Disease, including glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) mimetics, a vaccine, an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective approaches as well as the development, in collaboration with Amersham Health, of a diagnostic imaging tool. The Company has advanced to date three drug candidates to clinical trials: Alzhemed™, for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, Fibrillex™, for the orphan disease Secondary Amyloidosis, and Cerebril™, for Hemorrhagic Stroke. At present, the Company employs over 77 people and is located in Saint-Laurent, Canada (www.neurochem.com).
