Neurochem Inc. regains full ownership rights on drug molecules for Alzheimer's disease

Neurochem Inc. (TSX : NRM) announces an agreement with H.Lundbeck A/S ("Lundbeck") pursuant to which Neurochem will regain the full ownership and control of its anti-amyloid drug molecules program for Alzheimer's Disease at no cost to Neurochem. Neurochem intends to accelerate the clinical development timelines for its lead drug candidate Alzhemed™ both in Canada and the United States. Neurochem plans to initiate a Phase II clinical trial in North America in the second half of fiscal 2002.

"Our agreement with Lundbeck has been beneficial to Neurochem in many ways," said Dr. Louis R. Lamontagne, President and Chief Executive Officer of Neurochem. "We have enjoyed a very productive relationship and over the course of our collaboration we have improved our drug candidate Alzhemed™."

The partnership has led to the achievement of a "proof-of-concept" for Alzhemed™ in a transgenic mouse model of amyloid deposition in the brain, a model described in the prestigious Journal of Biological Chemistry of March 2001. In addition, it led to an improved formulation of the drug candidate into an orally available tablet.

The development of Alzheimer drug candidates will be supported financially by Neurochem and Industry Canada's Technology Partnership Canada program (TPC) which awarded Neurochem $7.8 million in an investment contribution in January 2000 to be allocated over a number of years. Neurochem's year-end results for fiscal 2001 highlighted a strong financial position with cash and short-term investments of $36.1 million as at June 30, 2001.

The three drug development programs for Alzheimer's Disease, Secondary Amyloidosis and Hemorrhagic Stroke due to Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy have yielded promising results. Neurochem is moving ahead with a multi-pronged strategy to combat Alzheimer's disease, including ongoing partnered collaborative efforts for an anti-amyloid based vaccine and diagnostic tool program for the disease.
